Nachtrag:

: If the service fails to start under Windows NT then the chances are you 
have installed the mySQL server into a different directory than the 
default. (e.g. c:\program files\mySQL) If this is the case you need to do 
two things: 1. create a c:\winnt\my.ini file which details where the mySQL 
apps & data resides (see help elsewhere) 2. copy the "mysql" subdirectory 
from the ~\mysql\data directory to where you have specified the data will 
reside. Always find and read the mysql.err file - it should tell you what 
is going wrong :-)
