[php] preg_replace

Hallo

$a = preg_replace('/http?:\/\/[^ $]+/i', '<a href=">$1</a>',$a);  
funktioniert gut bis auf dass das $1 nicht funktioniert. Es ist immer
leer. Auch mit \\1 gehts nicht. 

Hat jemand eine Ahnung woran das liegen könnte?
