pdflatex ist m.E. auch im kommerziellen Einsatz kostenlos.
ein Auszug aus dem ReadMe von Version 0.12 -> zugegebenermassen schon 
etwas älter... aber die Lizenz sollte sich nicht verändert haben:

das Setzen von Schriftstücken, besonders Tabellen, geht mit pdfTex 
acuh bedeutend angenehmer als mit der pdflib.....
