[php] GDlib-support in php4?

I recently upgraded my system from php3 to php4b3 and I'm experiencing
problems with the image functions (e.g. imagecreate();. )
What I need is GD-support for PNG or GIF when using vhgraph classes.
Does PHP4b3 support GD / imagefuncs by default or do I have to
compile/loadmodule libgd just like I used to do it in php3?
If so - where can I find some more information regarding
GD/migration/install notes based on PHP4?
